Library Week in Turkey, 28 March – 3 April 2011 – Part I
For the past 47 years, the last week in March has been celebrated as Library Week in Turkey (1) with the goal of developing the love of reading and emphasizing the importance of books to students and the awareness of libraries for the general public.
Very few advertisements on the Library Week appeared in the news media, or anywhere except in only a few places. One of the newspapers reported that the Library Week celebration took place at the Antique Library in Ephesus. The posters for the Library Week includes the photograph of the Library in Ephesus, built in 970 AD.

Birds Without Wings, by Louis de Bernieres
This book tells about what happened to the Greeks of Anatolia at the end of First World War. For many years the Greek version of events misled the people, never accepting that it was a blunder on their part and caused untold death and destruction in Anatolia and resettlement of 1,500,000 Anatolian refuges. Louis de Berniere, a British soldier whose grandparent fought in the Dardanelle battles, tells about this event, truthfully, including the life of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, from his birth to 1923 when the Republic of Turkey was established.
I visited Kayaköy several times, which is a wonderful place, as you have described in your book. The stories on the last days of the Otoman Empire, the population exchange and the life of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk are very moving. As you have told HDN- SW, Birds Without Wings is the Turkish ”War and Peace.” Thank you for being a friend of Turkey.

Chance Encounters – On the Way to Adana from Gaziantep
When a TAC schoolmate called and told me that he had a book for me, I decided to travel to Adana from Gaziantep by bus and fly to Istanbul from Adana. As I entered the bus terminal, a young chap came over and asked me where I was travelling, adding that Tatlıses bus to Adana was just leaving. I followed him to the bus that was ready to depart.

Gölcük Cultural and Social Lifetime Center, Kocaeli, Turkey
When a Tarsus American High School mate distributed the photographs of the Cultural and Social Lifetime Centre, I decided to visit the centre and meet with the Director and also introduce Turkish Library and Museum Project. This project was initially introduced on January 28, 2011 during a Symposium organised by the ‘’Adana Güç Birliği Vakfı’’, which incidentally is the opening date for the Cultural centre as well.
Ford Motor Company and the Vehbi Koç Foundation built the Centre on the 10th anniversary of the Ford Otosan Factory to provide services to the people of the plant and Gölcük. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Vehbi Koç Foundation.
The opening exhibition at the Centre was by Mr. Devrim Erbil, a famous painter of unique views of Istanbul and Anatolia with emphasis on nature. As Ms Semahat Arsel has stated during the opening ceremonies, Erbil’s art also represents the making of a car from hundreds of pieces.
The present exhibition at the Centre is by Raif Çancı, called ‘’Nefes – Breath’’, collection of photographs taken at a closed factory in Izmit, which retains many memorials.
We hope that Gölcük Cultural and Social Lifetime Centre, Vehbi Koç Foundation will be among the sponsors of the Turkish Library and Museum Project.

Timelines of World History
Dorling Kindersley Ltd. , Sr. Editor Debra Clapson, Publisher Andrew Heritage, (www.dk.com)
Timelines of World History is an excellent reference book, a product of fifteen years of self-study by John B. Teeple, whose great uncle, a civil engineer and a devotee of world history, gave him the idea and most of the material. Unfortunately, Mr. Teeple died in 2002 before the book was published.
The book, first published in 2002, has been reprinted in 2003 and 2006, hence thousands of copies are available at libraries accross the USA. It begins with the Origins of Life on Earth and concludes at the outset of the 3rd Millenium.. The first section covers the 10,000 to 500 BC span and advances through the years to the period from 1800 to 2005 in five year intervals, full of maps, photographs, list of dynasties and historical facts. It is a very useful reference book and I enjoyed going throught its pages, which will be a good reading material, perhaps for the next 15 years. It is close to 800 pages.
