I am honored to be here as a contemporary author of modern Turkey where great leader Atatürk introduced secularism, ninty one years ago.

I feel so lucky to have grown up in Atatürk’s Turkey,  and also in a family where girls, for generations, had been raised as praised individuals with rights to study, to choose their way of life,  to choose their husbands with whom they stood beside with love all the way. Those women were strong and brave and they set a great example for me.

A. Becoming Bilingual

1. What was your motive to learn another language?

In early 1970’s in Turkey, learning another language was not a part of the public school system, in particular, in the elementary school and during the first five-year years. However, after elementary school, starting in the middle school, public school system offered one-foreign language option and once-a-week as 40 min. within the following three: English, French and German

I had chosen English. On the other hand, I realized that once-a-week and total 40 min. based on the memorizing vocabulary and reading The Smith Family story alone was not enough.

She was born and raised in Turkey, and as an adult became the first of her family to have legal residency in the United States.  She learned English by teaching herself before she came to the United States, where once she arrived,  the English language then became used in her daily vocabulary. MAHATMA GANDHI IN TUNE

Celebrating Gandhi’s 149th Birthday, and in support of The United Nations’  International Day of Nonviolence on 2 October, which is ‘the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi for whom non-violence was at the center of his life and thought.’

“I do not believe that the spiritual law works in a field of its own.  On the contrary, it expresses itself only through the ordinary activities of life.  It thus affects the economic, the social and the political fields.
– Mohandas K. Gandhi
For Gandhi, non-violence was an expression of spiritual law, the way in which the spiritual energy of the universe manifested itself in physical form. “There is a soul force in the universe which, if we permit it, will flow through us and produce miraculous results.”  There were three aspects of life in which Gandhi was particularly concerned with the expression of the spiritual law of non-violence.  The first was his own personal atunement with the spiritual energy, which he sometimes called ‘God’ or ‘Truth’ or ‘Love’ but often left unnamed.  He also believed that this spiritual atunement had to be followed by the persons working closely with him — a view which often led to difficulties as many of his followers saw non-violence as an effective technique against English domination and not necessarily as a guiding principle of life.
