CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION FOR A TEACHER: HAYDAR GÖFER
I had a ball visiting my home country Turkey last month- mostly the schools where I had spent perhaps the happiest times of my life. What prompted the trip was the end of the centennial and the beginning of the 101st birthday celebration of one of my favorite teachers at Tarsus American College (TAC), Haydar Göfer. I had missed the beginning of the 100th year in February of last year.

1. What was your motive to learn another language?
In early 1970’s in Turkey, learning another language was not a part of the public school system, in particular, in the elementary school and during the first five-year years. However, after elementary school, starting in the middle school, public school system offered one-foreign language option and once-a-week as 40 min. within the following three: English, French and German
I had chosen English. On the other hand, I realized that once-a-week and total 40 min. based on the memorizing vocabulary and reading The Smith Family story alone was not enough.

Yıllar yılı, her New York’tan İstanbul’a gittiğimde, doğmuş olduğum ve hiç ayak basma imkanını bulamamış olduğum toprakların, özellikle Güneydoğu bölgesinde bulunan şehirleri merak eder ve gitmeyi de düşünüp dururdum da, bir türlü gidemezdim…

Bunun temel bir nedeni ise Türkiye’nin son 40 yılı aşkın bir süreçte sistematize olarak PKK terör belasıyla karşı karşıya getirilmiş ve bunun bugün dahi maalesef devam ediyor, olmasıdır. Bu durum, ülkenin Güneydoğu ve Doğu’sunda can güvenliği faktörünü, öz’de ise yörenin ülke sathında “güvensiz” kılınmasını getirmiştir. Özellikle de, gerek ülke çapında gerekse dünyaya bu yörelere ilişkin “güven” değil, “güvensizlik” pazarlanmıştır.
Onlarca yıl sürekli ve çok yönlü/kanallı bir çok dış devlet kaynaklı–destekli (20 kadar dış devletin arkasında olduğu bazı köşe yazarlarınca gündeme getirilmekte olan) PKK terörü ve propogandası; bu yörelerdeki şehirlerimize ilişkin “can güvenliği” daha doğrusu “can güvensizliği” konusunu da, ülke gündeminde en tepeye oturtmuştur.
