The Opening Remarks from H.E. Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of United Nation
H.E. Antonio Guterres stated:
• “Time of Equality and Opportunity,
• Respect and equal participation,
• Time of into violence.
Around the world women’s and girls are calling out abusive behavior and discriminative attitude that face everywhere and all the time. They are insisting on lasting change that is what women and girls want, and that is what I want, and this is every sensible man and boy wants.”
UN Women Executive Director, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, said: “We know that healthy societies include a wide mix of voices, yet millions of women around the world are being silenced and their potential cramped. The current solidarity movements have to be a tipping point for accountability; an end to impunity and the cyclical poverty of women in both rural and urban areas. Lively political activism from both men and women must target change for those who need it most”.
UN Women’s latest report, Turning Promises into Action, reveals:
Many Countries Still lacks Legislation on Violence upon women
– 49countries have no legislation on domestic violence
– 45countries have no legislation that specifically addresses sexual harassment
– 37 countries exempt rape perpetrators from prosecution if they are married to or subsequently marry the victim
– More than 50 per cent of urban women and girls in developing countries live in conditions where they lack at least one of the following: access to clean water, improved sanitation facilities, durable housing, and sufficient living area. (Source: from UN WOMEN Press Release | #UNWomen)
