Demet EDEER, President
Turkish-Canadian Society
The Turkish-Canadian Society (TCS) (https://turkishcanadiansociety.org/) was founded in 1963 and since then, has been working towards increasing the public’s knowledge and appreciation of the arts, culture, language, history, and traditions of Turkey. We have been contributing to the vibrant multicultural character of British Columbia at different levels, be it organizing or participating in festivals, concerts, art exhibitions, or music and dance events… In the past, we also offered Turkish language lessons for kids. Our TOPLUM Magazine has always attracted a large audience, and our celebrations (Republic Day and Turkish-Canadian Friendship Nights, April 23 Turkish Sovereignty Day and Multicultural Children’s Day Celebration) have always been well-attended by the community.
The Vancouver Turkish Film Festival (VTFF) (https://vtff.ca/) is our largest scale volunteer effort and accomplishment. It started as a volunteer undertaking of TCS, in 2011. Every year an army of volunteers run the event under the direction of the VTFF Organizing Committee; which itself is comprised of dedicated volunteers, including our festival director Eylem Sönmez. Since 2011, we have showcased over 50 Turkish films in Vancouver. Our open-minded films are selected with a focus on giving voice to women, minorities and underrepresented communities. Throughout these years, we have also presented panel discussions, Q&A sessions and welcomed guest artists/producers/directors. Our festival has always been well-attended and regarded highly by the community.
This year, although we will miss getting together in person, the online format will enable us to reach an even wider audience across Canada and the United States. You can get your tickets or your festival passes through https://watch.eventive.org/vancouverturkishfilmfestival2020. The 7th VTFF will run from December 16th to 21st and will screen four award winning feature films (‘Hive’, ‘La Belle Indifference’, ‘Love, Spells’ and All’, ‘Not Knowing’) and 10 amazing short films (pre-selected by STFF) from Turkey. Our co-presenters are the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Woodward’s Cultural Programme and the North West Film Forum (NWFF).
Hope to see you join us and enjoy the 7th VTFF!
